USE CASES

What individuals sign with electronic signatures.

Most personal paperwork can be signed online instead of printed - leases, NDAs, consent and permission forms, offer letters, personal loans, waivers, and tax or authorization forms. Each is governed by the ESIGN Act and your state’s UETA, so the signature carries the same legal weight as wet ink and the signed file travels with a certificate of completion. There is no cap on how many you sign, even free, and when a document is sent to you there is no account to create at all - you open the link, sign, and keep a sealed copy that proves who signed and when.

LEGAL VALIDITY

Is a document I sign as an individual legally valid?

Yes. Leases, consent forms, personal loans, waivers, and offer letters signed electronically carry the same legal weight as wet ink in the United States, under the federal ESIGN Act of 2000 and state UETA laws.

Outside the US, the same holds under the EU’s eIDAS regulation, where Document eSign meets the Simple (SES) and Advanced (AdES) electronic signature standards.

If a signature is ever questioned, the audit trail is what settles it. Document eSign records your email and IP address with a timestamp for every action - opened, viewed, and signed - then binds the finished document with a PAdES-B seal. That seal is a cryptographic fingerprint of the file at the instant of signing: change a single character afterward and the seal no longer matches, so any PDF reader flags the document as altered. For personal paperwork, that is a stronger record than a signed page in a drawer.

What makes a signature hold up

  • Intent to sign - you deliberately apply your signature
  • Consent to sign electronically - captured before signing begins
  • Attribution - the signature is tied to you, your email, and your IP
  • A retained record - a tamper-evident copy and audit trail you can reproduce

FAQ

E-signatures for individuals, answered.

Is it actually free for individuals?

Yes. Solo signing is free forever - one user, unlimited documents, self-sign, an audit trail, a certificate of completion on every file, and two-factor authentication, with no credit card required at any point. The free plan is not a trial that expires or a teaser that locks the useful parts behind a paywall; it is a complete way for one person to sign and to send documents for signature. Paid plans exist for teams that need shared workspaces, custom branding, and bulk send, but if you are signing for yourself, the free plan is the whole product and it stays free.

Can I sign a document myself without sending it to anyone?

Yes. Self-sign lets you place your signature and fill any fields and finish in a single pass, with no separate signer flow and no email round-trip. You upload or import the PDF, drop your signature where it belongs, complete any dates or checkboxes, and download the finished file - the whole thing takes a minute or two. It is the fastest path when a document only needs your signature: a form, a waiver, a personal agreement, or a contract you are counter-signing. You can save a default signature so the next one is effectively one click, and every self-signed file still comes with a certificate of completion for your records.

Do I need to create an account to sign something sent to me?

No. When someone sends you a document to sign, you open a secure link from your email or text and sign directly in your browser - there is nothing to install and no account to create. You review the document, type or draw your signature, fill any fields, and you are done, usually in a couple of minutes from your phone. The signed copy and its certificate of completion are then available to you. You only ever need an account if you want to send documents yourself or keep a personal library of everything you have signed; for signing something handed to you, it is completely friction-free.

Can I import a file from Google Drive or Dropbox?

Yes. You can connect Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive once and then pick a file straight into the signing flow whenever you need it, instead of downloading and re-uploading. You can also just drag a PDF in from your computer or browse for it the usual way. There is no cap on how many documents you bring in and sign, even on the free plan, so importing from the cloud is just the convenient option when the file you need already lives in Drive or Dropbox rather than on the device in front of you.

Can I sign on my phone?

Yes. Signing runs entirely in the mobile browser, so you can review and sign from a phone or tablet with nothing to install. This is how most people sign a document someone sends them: the link arrives by email or text, you tap it, the document opens, and you sign by typing or drawing your name. It works the same whether the document was sent to you or you uploaded it yourself, and the result is identical to signing on a laptop - the same legally binding signature and the same certificate of completion. For a quick lease, waiver, or consent form, the phone in your pocket is all you need.

Is a document I sign here legally valid?

Yes. Documents signed electronically with Document eSign are legally valid under the U.S. ESIGN Act of 2000 and your state's UETA, and under eIDAS across the EU. These laws give an electronic signature the same standing as a wet-ink one when you intended to sign, consented to sign electronically, the signature is attributed to you, and a record is retained. Every document you sign gets a certificate of completion that records your email, IP address, and a timestamp for each action, plus a tamper-evident seal on the finished file. So a lease, waiver, or personal agreement you sign here carries the same legal weight as one you would sign on paper.

How do I know my documents are secure?

Every document is encrypted with AES-256 while it is stored and protected with TLS 1.2 or higher while it moves over the network, so your files are secured both at rest and in transit. You can also lock your account with two-factor authentication using any standard authenticator app, such as Authy, Google Authenticator, or 1Password, and you are issued one-time recovery codes at setup in case you lose your device. Because the finished file carries a tamper-evident seal, you can also tell whether a signed document has been altered after the fact. For personal paperwork, that is a stronger guarantee than a signed page sitting in a drawer.

Where are my signed documents kept?

Signed documents stay in your account until you choose to remove them - nothing is auto-deleted or expired, so a form you signed last year is still there when you need to find it again. You can download a sealed PDF with its certificate of completion at any time and keep it wherever you like, and nothing is locked to the platform. If you would rather not keep an account at all, you can sign something sent to you, download your copy, and that copy is yours to store however you prefer - the validity travels with the file, not with whether you stay signed up.
