USE CASES

What startups sign with electronic signatures.

A startup runs on agreements signed fast and often - MSAs, NDAs, order forms, pilot and advisor agreements, offer letters, and vendor contracts. Each can be signed electronically under the ESIGN Act and your state’s UETA, so the signature carries the same legal weight as wet ink and travels with a full audit trail. There is no envelope cap and no per-document fee, so a free founding-team account that closes your first customer still closes the hundredth, and every signed file is sealed with a tamper-evident certificate that holds up when an investor or acquirer reviews it later.

LEGAL VALIDITY

Are electronic signatures binding for startup contracts?

Yes. MSAs, NDAs, order forms, and advisor and contractor agreements signed electronically carry the same legal weight as wet ink in the United States, under the federal ESIGN Act of 2000 and state UETA laws.

Outside the US, the same holds under the EU’s eIDAS regulation, where Document eSign meets the Simple (SES) and Advanced (AdES) electronic signature standards.

What matters most for a startup is what happens at diligence. Document eSign records each signer’s email and IP address with a timestamp for every action - opened, viewed, and signed - then binds the finished document with a PAdES-B seal. That seal is a cryptographic fingerprint of the file at the instant of signing: change a single character afterward and the seal no longer matches. So the contracts you close in year one stand up cleanly in a data room in year three.

What makes a signature hold up

  • Intent to sign - the signer deliberately applies their signature
  • Consent to sign electronically - captured before signing begins
  • Attribution - the signature is tied to the signer, their email, and their IP
  • A retained record - a tamper-evident copy and audit trail you can reproduce

FAQ

Startup e-signatures, answered.

Is there a free plan for early-stage startups?

Yes. A founding team can start free forever - one user, unlimited documents, reusable templates, a full audit trail, certificate of completion, and two-factor authentication, with no credit card. That covers the agreements a pre-seed or seed-stage startup actually needs to send: NDAs, a first MSA, advisor agreements, and contractor paperwork. As you raise and hire, paid plans add team seats, bulk send, multiple workspaces, custom branding, and automatic cloud backup. The core signing and the legal validity are identical on every plan, so nothing you sign on Free has to be re-done when you upgrade - you simply unlock more capacity as the company grows.

Does it scale as we hire, or will we have to replatform?

It scales without a replatform. You add teammates one seat at a time, so the same account grows smoothly from a single founder to a team of twenty or more - there is no threshold where you are forced to migrate to a different product or re-import your templates and history. Everything you set up early carries forward: the NDA template a founder built on day one is the same one a new salesperson sends after a Series A. This is the core reason startups pick Document eSign over a per-envelope tool that gets punishing at volume or an enterprise suite that is overkill on day one - it fits the company you are now and the one you are becoming.

Can I send NDAs and MSAs from a template?

Yes. Prepare each agreement once with role placeholders - Buyer, Approver, Counterparty - and send it in seconds by filling the roles, instead of editing a Word file and re-placing signature fields every time. Templates are shared across the team, so everyone sends the same approved version and your legal language stays consistent. For NDAs specifically, you can publish a self-serve signing link on your website or in an email, so a prospect or partner signs themselves without you preparing a document at all. That turns the most common startup agreement into a link you paste, and the signed copy still comes back sealed with a full audit trail.

Can I send agreements to a whole list at once?

Yes. Bulk send takes a template and a recipient list and creates a personalized, separately tracked envelope for each person, so an outbound batch of order forms, partner agreements, or updated terms feels individual rather than mass-mailed. Reminders go out per recipient automatically, and any rows that fail - a bad email address, for instance - are exported so you can fix and resend just those. Each signed copy returns with its own certificate of completion and audit trail, and you can watch the batch complete in real time. It is built for the moment a startup needs to get the same paper in front of dozens or hundreds of people quickly. Bulk send is a paid-plan feature.

Can I run separate brands or product lines?

Yes. You can run multiple workspaces under one login, each with its own templates, branding, sender domain, and members. That suits a startup with more than one product, a holding structure, or a house-of-brands approach: the agreements that go out under one brand carry that brand's logo and come from its domain, while a second brand stays cleanly separated. Members can belong to the workspaces they need and nothing else, so access stays tidy as the team grows. You manage all of it from a single account, which means you are not juggling separate logins or paying for separate tools as you expand into new lines. Multiple workspaces are a paid-plan feature.

Can counterparties sign without creating an account?

No account needed. Every signer opens a secure link from their email and signs in the browser on any device - phone, tablet, or laptop - with nothing to install and no sign-up. This matters for a startup because the people you send agreements to are busy customers, investors, and partners who will not create an account just to sign your NDA. They tap the link, review, sign, and they are done in a couple of minutes, and you see it land in your workspace the instant they finish. You only need an account yourself, to prepare and send documents; everyone on the receiving end signs friction-free.

Are e-signed startup contracts legally binding?

Yes. MSAs, NDAs, order forms, and advisor agreements signed electronically are legally binding under the U.S. ESIGN Act of 2000 and your state's UETA, and under eIDAS across the EU. These laws give an electronic signature the same standing as wet ink when the signer intended to sign, consented to sign electronically, the signature is attributed to them, and a record is retained. Document eSign captures all four and seals each finished document with a PAdES-B signature, then issues a certificate of completion recording every signer's email, IP address, and timestamp. So the contracts you close in your first year are as enforceable as anything a much larger company signs.

Will our documents survive investor due diligence?

Yes. Every signed document keeps an append-only audit trail and a tamper-evident PAdES-B seal, so contracts hold up cleanly when an investor or acquirer reviews them in a data room. During diligence, counsel will check that your customer agreements, IP assignments, and advisor and contractor contracts were properly executed - and a Document eSign certificate of completion shows exactly who signed, from which email and IP, and when, with cryptographic proof the file has not changed since. That is far stronger evidence than a scanned wet-ink PDF, and it means the paperwork you signed quickly in the early days does not become a diligence problem later. You can export any document and its audit trail for the data room at any time.
