How it works

How to add page numbers to a PDF

1

Load your PDF

Choose the document to number. It opens on your device and reports its page count.

2

Choose position and format

Pick a corner or center, top or bottom, a format like Page 1 of 12, and where the count starts.

3

Download

Apply and save. The numbers are drawn into each page, so they show up in every viewer and every print.

Details that matter

Choosing a format that holds up

For anything that gets referenced in conversation - contracts, board packs, filings - use "Page 1 of 12" rather than a bare number. The "of 12" is what lets the other side notice a page went missing, which is the actual job page numbers do. Bare numbers are fine for reports nobody disputes.

The starting number matters when the file is part of a larger set: if this PDF continues a packet that ended at page 24, start at 25 and the combined set reads continuously. Two cautions from experience. If the document already has page numbers, adding new ones gives every page two - check the first few pages before you assume it's unnumbered. And legal teams searching for "Bates numbering" should know this tool does plain sequential numbers, not Bates stamps with matter prefixes and fixed-width padding - close cousins, not the same thing.

Preparing a contract for signing?

Numbered pages make a contract navigable; signatures make it real. Document eSign adds the fields, collects every signature, and stamps the outcome with a verifiable seal.

FAQ

Add page numbers, answered.

Is adding page numbers free?

Yes - the whole tool, every format, no account or watermark. Free tools are how Document eSign introduces itself; numbering your file obligates you to nothing.

Is the file sent anywhere for processing?

No. The numbers are drawn onto the pages by your own browser. The document never touches a server.

Can I start numbering from a page other than 1?

Yes - set any starting number. That's the trick for numbering a document that continues an existing packet.

What formats and positions are there?

Four formats (1, 1 of 12, Page 1, Page 1 of 12) and six positions: left, center, or right, at the top or bottom edge.

Will the numbers sit on top of my content?

They land in the margin, which is empty on most documents. Edge-to-edge designs are the exception - pick a corner the design leaves clear.

Can I number an encrypted PDF?

Not while it's locked. Save a password-free copy from the original app and number that one.
