What survives a merge - and what doesn't
Merging copies pages, not everything attached to them. Text and images come through untouched, at their original resolution. Mixed page sizes are fine too: an A4 contract and a Letter-size scan sit side by side in the output, each keeping its own dimensions. Nothing is scaled or cropped.
Two things do not reliably survive. Bookmarks (the sidebar table of contents some PDFs carry) are not carried into the merged file. And interactive form fields can break when their pages move to a new document - the boxes may still be visible but stop accepting input. If one of your files is a filled form, run it through our Flatten PDF tool first. That bakes the answers into the page so they read as normal content in the merged file.
Getting the order right the first time
The most common merge job we see is assembling a contract packet: the agreement itself, then Exhibit A, Exhibit B, and a signed W-9 at the back. Add the files in any order - the list is what counts, and you can drag entries until the sequence matches the packet.
One habit worth stealing: check the page count next to each file before merging. A 3-page exhibit showing 6 pages usually means the scanner picked up blanks. Pull those out with Delete PDF pages first, then merge. It's faster than fixing the combined file afterwards.
The other frequent job is consolidating receipts or invoices for an expense report - a dozen small PDFs from a dozen vendors into one file for accounting. Two tips from doing this monthly: name the files 01-, 02-, 03- before you start and they'll already be sorted when you add them, and put the summary sheet first, not last, because that's the page the reviewer actually opens.

Do my files get uploaded to a server?
No. The merge runs as JavaScript inside your browser tab. Close the tab and every trace of your documents is gone - we never had them.
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
There's no built-in cap. Your device's memory is the real limit: dozens of ordinary documents merge fine on a laptop, while a phone may struggle past a few hundred megabytes of scans.
Can I merge PDFs with different page sizes?
Yes. Each page keeps its own size and orientation in the merged file. An A4 page followed by a Letter page is normal and prints fine - viewers handle mixed sizes without complaint.
Will merging reduce quality or re-compress images?
No. Pages are copied byte-for-byte where possible. Text stays selectable and scanned images keep their original resolution.
Do bookmarks and form fields survive the merge?
Bookmarks: no, they are not carried over. Form fields: unreliably - flatten filled forms first (our Flatten PDF tool does this) so the answers become part of the page.
What about password-protected files?
The tool can't open encrypted PDFs. Unlock the file in the app that created it, save an unprotected copy, and merge that.
