Typed, drawn, or uploaded - which should you use?
Draw it if the signature should look like yours. A finger on a phone screen produces a more natural line than a mouse - if your first attempt looks like a heart-rate monitor, open this page on your phone and try again there.
Type it if you care more about clean than authentic. Pick a script font, and the result is consistent every time - a good fit for initialing documents or a tidy consent form. Upload a photo if you already have a signature you like on paper: sign with a dark pen on white paper, photograph it straight-on in good light, and the background removal turns the white paper transparent. Faint pencil or blue-on-blue won't survive the cut cleanly.
Whichever route you take, nothing persists. The signature exists in your browser tab and in the file you download - close the tab and it's gone. We deliberately built it that way; a signature is not something a tool should quietly keep.
Putting the PNG to work
The transparent PNG is the version you want in almost every case - it floats over signature lines instead of covering them with a white box. In Word: Insert, Pictures, then set text wrapping to "In Front of Text" so you can drag it onto the line. In Google Docs: Insert, Image, then choose "In front of text" from the image toolbar. For an email signature block, resize to roughly 300 pixels wide first; full-size it will dwarf the text.
One honest caveat: an image pasted into a document is an ordinary picture. It shows agreement but proves nothing about who placed it or when. That distinction matters for contracts - our Sign PDF tool covers the everyday case, and our legality guide explains where the line sits.

No, and this matters more here than on most tools: a signature is exactly the thing you don't want sitting in a stranger's database. It renders on your device and exists only in the file you download.
Which format gives a transparent background?
PNG and WebP are transparent; JPEG fills the background white. If you're layering the signature over a document line, use the PNG.
How do I put it in a Word or Google document?
Insert it as an image (Insert > Pictures in Word, Insert > Image in Docs), then set wrapping to 'in front of text' so it can sit on the signature line. Resize by the corner handle to keep proportions.
Is a typed signature as valid as a drawn one?
Legally there's no ranking between them in the US. The ESIGN Act asks whether you intended to sign, not how pretty the mark is - a typed name, a drawn squiggle, and a wet-ink scan all clear the same bar for ordinary agreements.
Can I make initials too?
Yes - type or draw just your initials the same way. Many people export two files, a full signature and initials, and keep both handy for contracts that want each page initialed.
