Automatic cloud backup of signed documents
Mirror every completed envelope into Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive on a real-time, daily or weekly schedule, with a folder path you control.
Cloud backup copies every completed envelope into your own Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. Open Settings > Advanced features > Automatic cloud backup, turn on Enable backup, pick a destination, connect that account, and save. It's a workspace admin job and it's available on Business and above.
Turn on cloud backup and choose a schedule

-
Turn on Enable backup. Everything below it, Destination included, stays disabled until you do. That surprises people who arrive intending to choose a provider first.
-
Pick a Destination: Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive.
-
Pick a Schedule:
Option When it runs Real-time (immediately after signing) As each envelope is sealed. Daily (05:00 UTC) One sweep a day. Weekly (Sunday 05:00 UTC) One sweep a week. -
Scroll back up to the connection card, which now names the provider you just chose, and click Connect account. A single-permission prompt opens for the folder DocumentESign creates. Approve it and the badge flips to Connected, with a line underneath naming the authorized address.
-
Edit the Folder path. It starts at
/DocumentESign Backups/{year}/{month}and a Preview line under the field shows the real path with today's values filled in. -
Leave Include audit certificate on if you want the audit PDF stored beside the signed copy.
-
Click Save backup settings, then Apply settings in the confirmation dialog. It repeats the destination, the schedule and the resolved folder before you commit.

Five tokens work in the path, listed under Available tokens on the page: {year}, {month}, {day}, {document_name} and {document_id}. Anything else is rejected by name before you can save, and backslashes are refused outright. Paths use forward slashes.
The same accounts are listed on the integrations page if you'd rather connect from one place for everything. Either route produces the same connection.
Send a test backup
Once the settings are saved and the account is connected, click Send test backup. A sample file goes to the folder your path resolves to, and a toast tells you to check the destination in a moment. Do this before you rely on the setup. It's the fastest way to confirm the folder is the one you meant.
The button stays disabled until backup has been saved as enabled.
Check that backups are landing
The Status block lists the last successful upload, the last failed upload, and the last error text if there was one. Underneath, a Recent backups table lists individual documents with a status badge of OK, Failed or Pending, the folder each landed in, and when. Document names in that table link straight to the document.
A backup copy is a mirror of what the product already holds. You can still download the signed and audit PDFs from the document itself whenever you need them.
If something goes wrong
- Save backup settings is grayed out. Either the folder path has an error printed under it, or backup is switched on with no connected account for the chosen provider.
- The badge reads Needs reconnect. The saved connection is gone, revoked at the provider or belonging to a removed member. Click Reconnect and save again.
- A toast says to connect your account first. You changed the destination to a provider you've never authorized. Connect that one before saving.
- Rows in Recent backups say Failed. Hover the badge for the reason. A full drive and a deleted destination folder are the two common causes.
- Backups stopped after someone disconnected a cloud account. Disconnecting the account cloud backup uses turns the feature off deliberately, rather than failing quietly on every envelope. Reconnect, then save these settings again.
Frequently asked questions
Which documents get backed up?
Completed envelopes only. A draft, an envelope still out for signature, and a declined or cancelled one are never uploaded. Backup starts from the moment you switch it on, so anything signed before that stays only in Document eSign unless you download it yourself.
Whose cloud account do the files land in?
The account of the admin who connected the provider and saved the settings. The connection card names them, reading "Saved by you" or their name, with the authorized address alongside. If that person disconnects the account, backups stop until someone reconnects and saves again.
What is the difference between real-time, daily and weekly?
Real-time uploads each document as soon as it is sealed. Daily sweeps once at 05:00 UTC and weekly on Sunday at 05:00 UTC, both catching everything completed since the last run. Pick real-time when a signed copy needs to be in your drive the same hour.
Does switching providers move my old backups?
No. Files already uploaded stay in the old provider exactly where they are, and only new envelopes go to the new one. The confirmation dialog says this in plain terms before you apply the change, naming both the old and the new destination.
Can I back up the audit certificate too?
Yes. The Include audit certificate switch is on by default and uploads the tamper-evident audit PDF next to the signed copy in the same folder. Turn it off if you only want the signed document, though most teams keeping records for compliance leave it on.
