Audit trail settings

Choose how the Certificate of Completion reaches everyone, and whether it carries the event log and the legal disclosure.

Updated Open in app
The Audit trail card in Document eSign settings with the audit trail delivery dropdown

Every completed document gets a Certificate of Completion, and the Audit trail card decides how that certificate travels and what it contains. You'll find it under Settings > Policies & audit, below the work policies.

Who can do this

Workspace admins, on Growth and above.

Choose how the certificate is delivered

  1. Open Settings, then Policies & audit, and scroll to the Audit trail card.

  2. Open the Audit trail delivery dropdown and pick a setting. The table below says what each one sends.

  3. Use Include event log to control whether the document history table is printed into the certificate. That table is the who-and-when: sent, viewed, signed, and the rest, in order.

  4. Use Include legal disclosure to add the electronic record and signature disclosure, the consent copy each signer accepted before signing.

Like the rest of the policies page, nothing needs saving. Each change writes immediately and a toast confirms it.

What each delivery setting sends

SettingWhat recipients get
Append to signed PDFOne file. The certificate pages sit at the end of the signed document.
Send as separate attachmentTwo files. The signed document stays clean and the certificate arrives beside it.
Append and send as attachmentTwo files, and the signed document carries the certificate pages inside it as well. New workspaces start here.

What happens next

When the last signer finishes, the certificate is built and the completion email goes out carrying whatever your delivery setting asks for.

A document locks in its delivery choice the moment it is created. Switching now shapes what you send next, not what is already sitting in someone's inbox.

The certificate itself is always stored against the document and can be downloaded from its page at any time, whichever setting is on. Read the audit trail and certificate guide for what each section of that PDF proves.

If something goes wrong

  • A control stays visible but won't respond. Audit settings need Growth or above, and a coral Upgrade chip sits next to the Audit trail card title. Clicking the control opens a panel naming the plan you need.
  • Recipients report only one attachment. Delivery is on Append to signed PDF, so the certificate is inside the signed file. Scroll to the end of it.
  • A very large signed document arrived as a download link instead of an attachment. Big files go out as links, not attachments. Both PDFs are still available from the document page.
  • The certificate looks shorter than you expected. One of the two include switches is off. Turn it back on and complete a fresh document to check.
  • You changed a setting and an old certificate didn't change. Certificates are generated once, at completion, and are never rewritten.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the three delivery options?

Append to signed PDF stitches the certificate pages onto the end of the signed file. Send as separate attachment leaves the signed file untouched and ships the certificate as a second PDF. Append and send as attachment does both, which is the setting a new workspace starts on.

Does turning off the event log delete the history?

No. The setting only decides whether the history table is printed into the certificate PDF. Every event stays recorded against the document, and the timeline on the document page still shows who opened it, when they signed, and everything else in order.

Will changing this rewrite certificates I already have?

Certificates already generated stay exactly as they were, and a document keeps the delivery choice that applied when it was created. Anything you send after the change picks up the new setting instead, so it is worth putting a test document through to yourself if you want to see the result before a real contract goes out.

Can I still get the certificate if delivery is set to append only?

Yes. The certificate is always produced and stored against the document, whatever the delivery setting says. Open the document and download it from there. That setting changes only what recipients receive by email, and never what you can pull down yourself afterwards.

What is in the legal disclosure section?

The electronic record and signature disclosure, which is the consent copy signers agree to before they can sign. Including it puts the exact wording they accepted into the same PDF as their signature, which is useful if anyone later questions what was shown to them.
