Attach files when signing a document
Upload the ID, certificate or other file the sender asked for from the signing page. Required slots must be filled before you can finish.
If the sender asked you for a file, an upload slot for it sits in the same list as your signature and form fields on the signing page. Click the slot and pick the file. Finish signing becomes available once every required slot has something in it.
Who can do this
Any signer, with or without an account. The sender needs Growth or above to request attachments, so if there is no slot on your signing page, none was asked for.
How to attach a file while signing
-
Open the signing link from your email and click Agree & continue. If the sender protected the document with an email code or a PIN, enter that first.
-
On the signing page, look at the Required items list. Upload slots sit under the heading Files to upload, below your form fields. Each one carries the sender's label ("Photo ID", "Insurance certificate") with the accepted type and size limit underneath, for example PDF or image · up to 10 MB. Slots you can skip say optional.
-
Click the slot. Your device's file picker opens.

-
Choose the file. A spinner runs while it uploads, then a tick and the file name replace the type hint.

-
Wrong file? Click the slot again to replace it, or click the bin icon (Remove file) to clear it.
-
Complete the rest of your fields and click Finish signing. Until every required slot has a file, the main button reads Upload files instead (Upload files - 2 left on a desktop, with the count of items still outstanding). Click it and the page scrolls to the next empty slot with the note Upload a file here to continue.
What happens next
Your file is stored with the document the moment the upload finishes, and the audit trail records the upload with the file name and time. Reloading the page keeps it.
Once you finish, the sender sees an Attachments section on their document page and can download each file. If they ticked Include in final PDF when setting up the slot, a PDF or image you uploaded is appended to the completed document as extra pages, so it also appears in the signed copy emailed to everyone. Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV) are never merged in. They stay as separate downloads for the sender.
If something goes wrong
- "File is too large. Max 10 MB." The sender sets the limit per slot. 10 MB is the default. Compress the PDF, or photograph the page at a lower resolution, and try again.
- "That file type isn't allowed for this slot." The slot accepts only what its hint says. A slot marked PDF only rejects a JPEG, and an Image only slot rejects a PDF. Convert the file, or ask the sender to loosen the rule.
- "You still need to upload the requested file(s)." A required slot was empty when your signature was submitted, usually because an upload did not register. Scroll to Files to upload. The empty slot is the one without a tick. Upload the file again, then finish.
- The upload spins and then fails. Usually a dropped connection. Wait for the error, then click the slot and choose the file again. Each slot holds one file, so retrying never creates duplicates.
- You uploaded, then the page says the link has expired. The sender's deadline passed before you finished. Your upload is kept, but the document is locked, and only the sender can send a new request.
Frequently asked questions
Which file types can I upload while signing?
It depends on the slot. The sender picks one of four rules per slot: PDF only, image only (PNG, JPEG, WebP or HEIC), PDF or image, or Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV and PDF). The accepted type and the size limit are printed under the slot name, so check there before choosing a file.
Why does the main button say Upload files instead of Finish signing?
A required upload slot is still empty. That button walks you through everything the sender marked required, fields first and then files, and it only changes to Finish signing once all of them are done. Click Upload files and the page scrolls to the slot that still needs something. Optional slots never block you.
Can I replace a file after uploading it?
Yes, as long as you have not clicked Finish signing. Click the slot again and choose a different file, or click the bin icon to remove it. Each slot holds one file, so a new upload replaces the old one. After you finish, contact the sender if something needs changing.
Does the sender see my attachment in the signed PDF?
The sender downloads each file from the Attachments section of the document page. If they chose to include the slot in the final PDF, a PDF or image upload is appended to the completed document as extra pages. Office files always stay separate downloads and are never merged in.
Do my uploads survive if I close the tab halfway?
Yes. Every upload saves as soon as the spinner finishes. Reopen the same signing link later and the slot still shows the tick and file name, so you only need to finish the remaining fields. The exception is a document that has expired in the meantime, which locks everything.
