Change your email address

Enter your password, then type the 6-digit code sent to the new mailbox. The old address is notified at both stages and other devices are signed out.

Updated Open in app

Moving your account to a different mailbox takes two proofs: your current password, and a 6-digit code typed into the dialog from the new address. Start at Settings > Profile and click Change beside your email.

Who can do this

Anyone, on any plan, for their own account. An admin cannot change someone else's address for them.

Change the address

  1. Open Settings > Profile and click Change next to the Email box.

The Profile page with the Change button beside the email address highlighted

  2. Type the address you want in New email address.

  3. Fill in Current password. Accounts that sign in with Google or Microsoft and have never set a password do not see this field at all.

  4. Click Send code.

  5. Open the new mailbox and type the 6-digit code into Confirmation code. It submits itself the moment the sixth digit lands, so there is no button to hunt for.

If the code has not arrived, check the spam folder first: the message goes to a mailbox that has never heard from us before. Send a new code becomes clickable 60 seconds after the last send, with a countdown until then.

Two-factor authentication plays no part in this flow. An account with it switched on is never asked for an authenticator code while it moves to a new address.

What happens next

Your new address is live straight away and is marked verified, so sign-in uses it from that moment. You stay signed in on the device you made the change on, and every other session is dropped. Phones and second browsers will ask for the new address and your password again.

Two notices go to the old mailbox, one when you request the change and one when it completes. Envelopes previously sent to the old address that were never tied to an account get attached to you, so they carry on showing in your inbox. Documents already signed keep the old address printed on their audit certificate, which is the honest record of who signed.

Until you confirm, the Profile page shows a line saying it is waiting on confirmation for the pending address. Reopening Change takes you back to the code step or lets you start again.

If something goes wrong

  • "Current password is incorrect." Retype it, or reset it first from the sign-in page.
  • "That code isn't right. Check it and try again." 5 wrong tries burn the code. Ask for a new one and use the most recent email.
  • "Too many tries. Request a new code." Same fix, and the request itself is capped at 3 sends in 5 minutes, so wait it out.
  • "Your account has to stay on your organization's email domain." Your workspace has verified your current domain. Pick another address on that same domain.
  • "An account with this email already exists." Someone already registered that address. Use a different one, or delete the other account first.
  • "You can't move your account to an address on that domain." Another workspace has claimed the domain you are moving to. Ask an admin there to invite you instead.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does the confirmation code last?

10 minutes from the moment it is sent. After that the code stops working and you need a fresh one, which the dialog hands you 60 seconds after the last send. Requesting a new code cancels the previous one, so always type the newest email you received.

I signed in with Google. Do I still need a password?

No. An account created through Google or Microsoft has no password to check, so the dialog skips that field and the code sent to your new mailbox is the only gate. Everything after that step works exactly the same way.

What happens to documents sent to my old address?

They move with you. Any envelope that was addressed to the old mailbox and had no account attached is linked to your account during the change, so it keeps showing in your inbox. Already-signed documents keep the old address on their audit certificate, which is correct and cannot be edited.

Why was my new address refused?

Two rules can block it. If your workspace owns your current email domain you have to stay on that domain, and if another workspace has already verified the domain you are moving to, you need an invitation from them instead of a self-service change.

Does anyone get told that my address changed?

Your old mailbox does, twice. One message goes out when you request the change and another once it completes, so whoever still reads that inbox can see the account moved away from it. Nobody in your workspace is emailed about it.

I typed the wrong address. How do I start over?

Click Cancel in the code step. That drops the pending change and nothing on your account moves. Open the Change dialog again and type the correct address. If you close the browser instead, the pending code expires on its own after 10 minutes.
