Add a custom consent disclaimer

Replace the standard electronic-record disclosure with your own legal wording. Every signer in the workspace reads it before signing, and it is embedded in the audit PDF.

Updated Open in app

Open Settings > Advanced features > Custom disclaimer notice, edit the text in the box, and click Enable custom disclaimer. Your wording then replaces the standard electronic-record disclosure that every signer in the workspace reads before they sign.

Who can do this

Workspace admins, on Business and above. It changes what your signers legally consent to, so get whoever owns your contract wording to approve the text before you turn it on.

  1. Open Settings > Advanced features and click Configure on Custom disclaimer notice.

  2. Read what is already in the editor. We pre-load our standard six-section ESIGN disclosure rather than a blank page. Most workspaces edit a few paragraphs instead of drafting from scratch.

  3. Edit it. The toolbar gives you Bold, Italic, Underline, two heading levels, and bulleted and numbered lists. Enough structure for a disclosure, and not enough to make a mess of one.

  4. Click Enable custom disclaimer. The button stays disabled while the editor is empty.

If you want the standard copy back while you're still writing, Restore defaults reloads it into the editor. It only touches the editor. Nothing changes for signers until you click the enable button.

What your signers see

Before a signer can open the document they get a consent screen, the first stop in signing a document you received. The line on it reads "By continuing, you confirm you have read and understood the Electronic record & signature disclosure and consent to use electronic records and signatures. Your IP address, browser, and the time of every action will be recorded in the audit trail." The disclosure phrase is a link. Clicking it opens a dialog with that same fixed heading at the top and your text below it. The signer closes the dialog and clicks Agree & continue.

Your wording is also written into the legal-disclosure page of the audit trail PDF for every document signed while it is active. An auditor reading that PDF years from now sees the wording you shipped today. Get it right the first time.

Manage your custom disclaimer

Once enabled, the page turns into a status panel: Status, a Word count, Last updated, and the fixed Heading, next to a rendering of your text. The dialog frame around it follows the logo and color in your branding settings.

  • Edit reopens the editor with your current wording loaded. Click Save changes to publish the revision.
  • Disable custom disclaimer switches signers back to our standard disclosure. Your text isn't kept, so copy it somewhere first if you might want it later.

If something goes wrong

  • Enable custom disclaimer will not click. The editor is empty, or holds only blank paragraphs. Type something.
  • The page shows a coral Business chip. Your plan does not include this feature and the editor is replaced by an upgrade panel.
  • A signer says they never saw your notice. They may have signed before you enabled it. Open that document's audit PDF, which carries the disclosure that was actually shown.
  • Your text looks cramped in the dialog. Long disclosures scroll inside it while the heading and close button stay pinned. Length isn't the problem. Break it up with headings if it reads as a wall.
  • You need different wording for a single document. The feature card describes an override per envelope from the wizard. There is no such override today. One disclaimer covers the whole workspace.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I set a different disclaimer per document?

No. One disclaimer applies to every signer in the workspace, on every envelope, from the moment you enable it. If separate entities need separate legal wording, they need separate workspaces. The setting lives on the workspace record, not on a template or on a single envelope.

Can I change the heading above my text?

No. The heading always reads Electronic record & signature disclosure, on the signing page and on the audit PDF alike. Keeping it fixed is deliberate, because auditors and legal reviewers look for that exact phrase. Everything below it is yours to write.

What does the editor start with?

Our standard six-section ESIGN disclosure, already loaded into the editor, so you start by editing real copy instead of a blank page. It covers document delivery, asking for a paper copy, withdrawing consent, keeping contact details current, technical requirements and the legal weight of an electronic signature.

Does my wording reach documents that are already out for signature?

Yes, for anyone who has not signed yet. The disclosure is read when a signer opens their link, so pending recipients see whatever is current at that moment. Documents already completed keep the wording that was live when they were signed, stored inside their audit PDF.

How do I go back to the standard disclosure?

Click Disable custom disclaimer on the active panel and signers see our standard text again from the next opened link. If you only want to undo an edit while writing, Restore defaults reloads the standard copy into the editor without saving anything.
