Upload a document to send for signature

Drag a PDF, Word file or image onto the first step of the send wizard, or browse your device. Up to 25 MB a file and 10 files per document.

Updated Open in app

Drop a PDF, Word file or image onto the upload area on the first step of the send wizard, or click Upload and browse your device. Accepted extensions are .pdf, .doc, .docx, .png, .jpg and .jpeg, up to 25 MB a file and 10 files per document.

Upload a document to send

  1. Click Send for signature in the top bar. You land on the step headed Add a document.

  2. Drag your files onto the dashed area, or click Upload to browse. Hold Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) in the file picker to select several at once.

The Add a document step of the send wizard with the Upload button highlighted

  3. Each file appears as a row with its size. A row reads uploading... while it transfers and ready when it has landed. With more than one file in flight, a counter above the list tracks progress.

  4. Click Continue to recipients. Nobody else signing? Click I am the only signer and the wizard skips straight to your own signature.

Both buttons stay disabled until every row says ready. Continue to recipients takes the draft to the next step, where you name the people who sign.

What happens next after you upload

Your files merge into one document in the order the rows appear, and Word files and images are converted to PDF at that point. Recipients page through the result as a single document, not as separate attachments.

The document takes its name from your first file, minus the extension. Click that name in the header bar to rename it before you send.

A draft is created as soon as the first file lands, so leaving the wizard loses nothing. Find it in Documents under the status Draft and click Edit to pick up where you stopped, with your files and any recipients still in place.

Files pulled straight from cloud storage behave the same way once they are in the list. Import from Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive covers that route.

Replace or remove a file

Click the X at the right of a row to take that file out. Removing and re-adding is also how you change the merge order, since the upload step has no drag handle. Do this before you click Continue to recipients: once a document is sent, its pages are locked for everyone.

If something goes wrong

  • "This file type isn't supported." Something outside the six accepted extensions was picked. Export spreadsheets, slide decks and .pages files to PDF, then upload the PDF.
  • "File is too large. Maximum size is 25 MB." Compress the PDF or split it across two files. Both still go into the same document.
  • "You can add up to 10 files." A document holds ten source files. Remove one to make room, or send the rest as a second document.
  • A row turns red and says Encrypted PDF. Password protection blocks field placement. Print or export the file to a clean PDF and upload that.
  • Corrupt PDF. The file is truncated or its structure is damaged, often after a failed download. Re-export it from whatever produced it.
  • Continue to recipients will not light up. One row is still transferring or has failed. Remove any failed row with its X and the button becomes available.

If a file still refuses to attach after all of that, contact support with the file name and the message you saw.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which file types can I upload?

Six extensions: .pdf, .doc, .docx, .png, .jpg and .jpeg. Word files and images are converted to PDF during the Continue step, so recipients always see a PDF. Spreadsheets and slide decks are not accepted from your device, so export them to PDF before you upload.

How many files can one document hold?

Ten. They merge into a single document that recipients page through in one sitting, in the order the rows appear in your list. Once you reach ten, the Upload button and the three cloud buttons go grey, and a toast tells you to remove a file before you can add another one.

Can I change the order of the merged files?

The merge follows the order of the rows on screen, which is the order you picked them in. There is no drag handle on this step, so to move a file remove it with the X on its row and upload it again at the position you want.

What happens to the draft if I leave the wizard?

It is saved. A draft is created the moment your first file lands, and it shows in Documents with the status Draft. Open it there and click Edit to drop straight back into the upload step with your files and any recipients already filled in.

Why is my PDF rejected as encrypted?

A PDF carrying an open password or a permissions password cannot be filled with signature fields. Open it in your PDF reader, print or export it to a fresh PDF without the protection, then upload that copy. The same fix clears the corrupt PDF error.
