What happens when you hit a plan limit

The warnings you get before a limit, what a blocked action looks like, when each counter resets, and which plan lifts which cap.

Updated Open in app

Nothing breaks when you reach a plan limit. The action you tried stops, a short panel explains which limit you hit and when it clears, and everything already in the workspace carries on working.

Ten recipients is the product-wide ceiling on a single document, which is why the paid plans share it. A custom plan can carry different numbers, and the plans and limits summary puts these side by side with the features each tier adds.

The warning you get before a limit

Monthly usage is shown to Free workspaces and workspaces on trial. Paid plans have no monthly cap to show, so they get no meter. A plan we manage for you never shows one either, even when it carries a monthly cap of its own.

From 80% of the monthly allowance, two things appear. The dashboard shows a callout counting what's left, in amber, turning red at the cap. The sidebar swaps its Get unlimited documents tile for a Docs this month meter with the running total and a Get unlimited link. Below 80% the numbers stay hidden. A count that reads "plenty left" isn't information you need yet.

What a blocked action looks like

Reaching a limit doesn't disable a button or grey it out. The control looks the same as always, and clicking it opens a small panel where the action would have started.

At the template cap, New template stops opening the create flow and shows "You've used all your templates" with your plan's number, plus an Upgrade plan button. A red line under the page title says the same thing.

Features your plan doesn't include behave the same way, with a coral Available on Business pill (or Growth, or Ultimate) and a sentence describing the feature.

Whether anything marks the control beforehand depends on where it sits. Bulk send and Create public link carry no marker at all, so you find out by clicking. Remind, Reassign and In person on the document page each show a small coral lock beside the label, and so does In-Person Signing in the send wizard and the use-template dialog. Clicking any of those opens the upgrade panel. The Auto-remind switch on the wizard review step is greyed out instead, and its panel opens on hover. The Developers tab shows a lock too, next to "Available on Business and Ultimate".

What each limit does when you reach it

  • Monthly documents. Sending stops for the rest of the billing cycle. The message names the reset date. Every paid plan sends unlimited documents, so an upgrade clears it immediately.
  • Daily documents. Sending stops with "Daily sending limit reached. Sending resumes at midnight UTC." and picks up again on its own at that point. On a paid plan the ceiling is fair-use, and the panel asks you to contact support instead of offering an upgrade.
  • Templates. You can't create another one. Archived templates count too, so archiving won't buy you a slot.
  • Recipients on one document. The document won't send until you remove someone. The cap applies to the document as a whole, signers and copies together.
  • Seats. Inviting another teammate is blocked. Free sees an upgrade banner on the Team page; a paid plan at its purchased seat count gets a one-line notice offering to add more. Existing members are untouched.
  • Bulk send rows. Nothing flags an oversized CSV while you review it. The cap is checked when you submit the send, and an oversized batch is refused with "Bulk send is limited to 10 recipients per send on your plan.", carrying your own plan's number.

If your plan is one we manage for you, every one of those panels says so and offers Contact support instead of an upgrade button. A negotiated plan shouldn't be replaced by a standard one from a popup.

Which plan lifts which limit

Growth removes the monthly document cap and the seat cap, and raises daily sending to 100. Business removes the template cap and turns on bulk send, custom fields, scheduled send and the rest of the workspace controls. Ultimate raises the daily ceiling to 500 and the bulk batch to 25 rows on one flat price. Changing plan takes effect straight away. A blocked action works the moment you're back in the app.

If something goes wrong

  • A button did nothing when you clicked it. It opened a panel. Look just below or beside the button.
  • The count on the dashboard looks too high. Scheduled sends that haven't gone out yet are already counted.
  • You upgraded but still see the limit. Reload the page. The new plan lands within a few seconds of the payment.
  • A red line sits under the page title on Documents or Templates. That's the limit notice for that list. It names the limit and links to the upgrade path.
  • No usage meter anywhere. The meter is built for Free workspaces and trials only. A paid plan has no monthly cap to show, and a plan we manage for you never displays one.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When does my monthly document count reset?

The monthly count only applies to Free workspaces and trials. On Free it resets on the first of the next month, and the dashboard callout prints that date once you're close to the cap. Paid plans send unlimited documents each month, so there's no monthly counter on them to reset.

Do archived templates still count toward my template limit?

Yes. The cap counts every template the workspace holds, archived ones included, so archiving doesn't free a slot. Delete a template you genuinely no longer want, or move to a plan with a bigger allowance, to get room for a new one.

Why is my send blocked when I have documents left this month?

You've most likely hit the daily cap rather than the monthly one. Every plan has a per-day ceiling, and it resets at midnight UTC rather than at your renewal. The block message reads "Daily sending limit reached. Sending resumes at midnight UTC." so you can tell the two apart.

I am on a paid plan and hit a daily limit. Should I upgrade?

Not necessarily. On paid plans the daily ceiling is a fair-use safety limit rather than a selling point, so the message asks you to contact support instead of offering an upgrade. Tell us what you're sending and we'll raise it for your workspace.

Do scheduled documents count before they go out?

Yes. A draft queued for a future send counts against your monthly allowance from the moment you schedule it, well before it goes out. You'll see it in the count straight away. That stops a month's worth of scheduling from quietly overshooting a cap that would block the sends anyway.

Does anything get deleted when I drop to a smaller plan?

No, nothing's deleted. Items above the new plan's limits keep working, and a banner lists exactly which ones they are. What changes is what you can start next, so creating a new template or inviting another member is what gets blocked, not what already exists.
